The Matrix Resurrections The Game Awards trophy Easter egg is featured at the start of the movie. The opening to a scene features a close-up of the award. It’s dated 1999, which is when the first Matrix movie was released.

Of course, The Game Awards wasn’t actually around in 1999. This award is purely an Easter egg that provides a nod for those in the gaming community. In fact, there are a number of gaming Easter eggs scattered around the offices, not to mention the many gaming meme references popping up in discussions.

Keanu Reeves’ character, Thomas Anderson, is actually seen celebrating the win of a The Game Awards trophy for developing the Matrix video game trilogy.

Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat and Injustice, also spotted the reference and tweeted it to Geoff Keighley on Twitter:

The Game Awards trophy is in The Matrix Resurrections as a way of emphasizing the success of the original Matrix installment. While it is a movie in our world, it’s a video game in Thomas Anderson’s new reality.

Keanu Reeves has made multiple The Game Awards appearances over recent years. He’s appeared on separate occasions to promote Cyberpunk 2077 and The Matrix Resurrections.

In organizing his The Game Awards appearances, as well as promoting the new Matrix movie, the discussion around including an actual The Game Awards trophy must have cropped up. The result? Multiple prominent appearances in the movie’s opening scenes.
