Bloober Team has revealed that the Layers of Fears release date will be early 2023 at Summer Game Fest 2022. Originally given the placeholder “Layers of Fear 3,” the developer is officially calling the next entry in the psychological horror franchise as simply Layers of Fears. The game is set to release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
What we know so far about Layers of Fears
Running on Unreal Engine 5, Layers of Fears will be co-developed between Bloober Team and Anshar Studios, which is known for Gamedec, an indie isometric game that released in 2021. The reveal trailer posted above shows off a dark, insidious tone with a story that will unravel across many generations, not just on one character. The YouTube description of the trailer describes it as a “first-person psychedelic horror chronicle focused on tense exploration and immersive storytelling.”
So far, the game looks in line with what the developers wanted, with Layers of Fears being “built upon the foundations of the original Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear: Inheritance, and Layers of Fear 2.”
Piotr Babieno, the Bloober Team CEO, stated in a press release that it is “bringing back a franchise that is really special… in a form that will give players a truly fresh gaming experience and that will shed new light on the overall story.” However, the team didn’t just want to repeat what has already been done: “We didn’t want to make it a simple collection of two remastered games.”
As for the interesting plural in the game’s title, Babieno teases that the developer has “worked out a new approach, something that is maybe not yet obvious,” but “there’s a reason why we called it Layers of Fears.”
In other news, The Rock appeared shirtless at Summer Game Fest to talk about Black Adam, and the Stormgate beta has been revealed with instructions on how to register.
