An official filming start date window has been confirmed for Squid Game Season 2. The Netflix series has been highly-anticipated ever since the original season drew to a close, and now fans know that the show is creeping one step closer to making its return. Lead star Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong Gi-hun broke the news, saying that it will take close to a full year to complete filming, which suggests a late 2024, or early 2025 broadcast time.
Squid Game Season 2 begins filming this year, but won’t finish until 2024
Speaking with Ilgan Sports, actor Lee Jung-jae confirmed (via allkpop.com) that “Squid Game 2 will begin filming in the summer and the filming will likely last for about 10 months. We were working on Season 1 for about 10 months as well, but that was with delays caused by COVID-19. But seeing as Season 2 will be bigger in scale, it will probably take longer to complete.”
To this point, the length of filming Squid Game Season 1 had been unknown, expected to have lasted around five months in the second half of 2020. Hearing that it actually took much longer may come as a surprise, especially since the show made it to Netflix in September 2021.
Going by a similar timeline, if Squid Game starts filming in June or July 2023, it can be expected to wrap shooting around April or May 2024. Adding a few months for production, editing, and everything that goes on behind closed doors, we should be looking at a Squid Game Season 2 release date of late 2024, or early 2025.
Another interesting note given by Jung-jae in his interview, suggested that the Front Man, played by Lee Byung-hun, will play a major part in the second season. After overseeing the games we witnessed in Season 1, “the main plot of Season 2 will be revenge,” says Jung-jae. “So it seems that the two of us will be the central figures of this next story.”
