NV Energy has issued a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) warning for customers in Genoa, South Carson City, and Virginia City Highlands due to elevated fire weather conditions forecasted for northern Nevada.
A proactive power outage is possible starting Wednesday, November 13, at approximately 10 a.m. and may last until Thursday, November 14, at around 9 a.m. This period includes the duration of the weather event and the time required for NV Energy crews to inspect lines and equipment for any damage, vegetation, or debris to safely restore power.
NV Energy said, "During a PSOM event, we will proactively de-energize power for certain customers in high-risk zones to help protect the community and environment from wildfires." The company emphasized that safety is its highest priority and that proactive outages are a key measure of defense against wildfires.
The decision to initiate a proactive outage is based on several factors, including weather conditions, vegetation levels, field observations, and guidance from local fire departments and other first responders. All impacted customers have been notified through phone, text, and email messages.
NV Energy continues to monitor the fire weather conditions and will provide regular updates to affected customers regarding the status of the outage event. The company noted that wind conditions can escalate quickly without notice, but the proactive outage may be canceled if weather conditions improve.
