The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees will decide on an additional $8.1 million for construction of a new elementary school in the Silver Dollar Development area of Stead during their Tuesday meeting.
The decision follows a recommendation from the Capital Funding Protection Committee, which met on Oct. 31, 2024.
Tami Zimmerman, the chief facilities management officer for the district, presented the proposal as part of the 2024/2025 ‘C’ Major Projects Program. The funding will be sourced from the Fund 94 2024B Extended Bond Rollover.
The new school will be a site-adapted building based on a previously designed prototype. Similar designs have been used for Nick Poulakidas Elementary School, John C. Bohach Elementary School, Michael Inskeep Elementary School, and JWood Raw Elementary School.
The board previously approved $52,300,000 for the construction phase of the Stead area elementary school as part of the 2024/2025 ‘A’ Major Projects Program on August 13, 2024. Additionally, agreements for architectural services with H+K Architects were approved earlier this year, totaling over $3 million.
The project aligns with Goal 3, Safety & Belonging, of the Washoe County School District Strategic Plan. If awarded by the Board of Trustees during Tuesday's meeting, this project is scheduled to be completed by May 1, 2026.
According to documents for Tuesday's meeting, four bids were received, and Clark/Sullivan Construction was deemed the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, meeting the specifications of the bid. The apparent low bidder was deemed non-responsive because they did not provide a signed bid form, which is a requirement of a bid submission.
This item aligns with Pillar D of the District’s strategic plan “Culture of Excellence & Accountability” as it supports a learning community built on collective responsibility, efficiency, and data-informed improvement to ensure optimized systems for teaching, learning, and leadership.
According to the district, the construction of the new Stead area elementary school will utilize Fund 94 (2024B Extended Bond Rollover) for a total cost of $54,254,370. The project includes the construction of an 88,000-square-foot, Type II-B, two-story elementary school at 926 Cloudburst Drive, Reno, NV 89506. It encompasses site work, grading, paving, landscaping, and various other construction elements.
Clark/Sullivan Construction has completed numerous projects for the district over the years. They were recently awarded the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) 1 at E. Otis Vaughn Middle School Replacement Project.
In order to provide a safe learning environment for students, the district does not believe there is an alternative solution to moving forward with this improvement.
Tuesday's meeting will start at 2 p.m. at the district's headquarters on E. 9th St. If you can't make it, the meetings are streamed on their YouTube page.
