Ravens running back Derrick Henry leads the NFL in rushing yards with 873, boasting more than 200 yards ahead of the next closest player. Despite his impressive stats, Henry believes he’s not even the best player in his own backfield.
"It’s L’s (Lamar Jackson). I don’t think there’s a question about who’s the number one MVP right now," Henry told fellow Heisman winner Mark Ingram II during an appearance on "The Triple Option."
"People doubt him so much because of his style of play. He’s one of a kind, one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play this game. The dude is electric in every single way," Henry continued.
Jackson, who already has two MVP trophies, has thrown for over 1,800 yards this season, in addition to nearly 500 yards on the ground and 17 total touchdowns. If he maintains this pace, he’ll surpass his performance from either of his previous award-winning seasons.
Henry and Ingram share a rich history, both winning Heisman Trophies and National Championships at Alabama. Now, Henry finds himself in the same backfield where Ingram played just four years ago. He’s since broken the 10,000 career rushing yards mark—an elite achievement for running backs—but he credits Ingram for the guidance he received along the way.
"I looked up to you, you know? Even going to Alabama, seeing your success in the league—you took the time out of your day to make sure my head was on straight. That really molded me into who I am today and helped me reach these milestones," Henry said.
The visit wouldn’t be complete without Henry offering advice to this year’s Alabama Crimson Tide, who fell to Tennessee over the weekend. "I still feel like y’all are the same Bama team. You can play defense and score from anywhere on the field. You have everything you need to be a championship-caliber team. You just have to go out there and do it," he said.
