The Holy Spirit Catholic Mission — which had the only Latin Mass in northern Nevada — was one of the structures destroyed when the Davis Fire ripped through Washoe Valley on Saturday.

The church, built in 1978, was leveled along with several homes and other structures along old U.S. 395 in New Washoe City.

Monday, parishioners returned to find the property reduced to rubble.

Council president Anthony Bedoy told News 4-Fox 11 they lost almost all the church's official documents, but were able to recover some sacred objects like the altar stone.

After feeling trauma and sorrow over the weekend, Bedoy said he now feels hope.

"The moment for sorrow was the moment on the cross. The moment for rejoicing is is three days later and it's been three days since we found out that this church burned. And so we've got work to do," he said.

In some ways we feel like the burning of this church isn't the end. This is a very new beginning for us.

Our crew was there as Bedoy and parishioners sifted through the debris to find sacred items that might be salvageable.

Moving forward, Bedoy said they will be celebrating mass at Bishop Manogue. Anyone who received their sacraments at Holy Spirit Catholic Mission is encouraged to contact the church's pastor. Click here for more information on what was lost and next steps for parishioners.
