Liz Cheney calls for Americans to accept election results

WASHINGTON (TNND) — Former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., on Wednesday called on Americans to accept the results of Election Day and charged them with acting as the “guardrails of democracy” in the months to come.

Cheney was a key supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris, having appeared alongside her at several political rallies across the country. Hosts of “The View” on Monday suggested she could have been a candidate to serve as attorney general in a potential Harris administration.

Taking to X, Cheney touted the successful exercise of democracy and acknowledged the selection of a new president-elect.

“All Americans are bound, whether we like the outcome or not, to accept the results of our elections,” she wrote. “We now have a special responsibility, as citizens of the greatest nation on earth, to do everything we can to support and defend our Constitution, preserve the rule of law, and ensure that our institutions hold over these coming four years. Citizens across this country, our courts, members of the press and those serving in our federal, state and local governments must now be the guardrails of democracy.”

Reacting to the post was former CIA counterterrorism chief Bernard Hudson.

“Unfortunately, the second half of former representative Cheney's post sounds a little too much like the instructions you provide to the stay-behind forces when the conventional military is forced to evacuate,” he wrote. “I hope most career civil servants will recognize it for what it is.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., last month suggested many people were displeased that Harris was campaigning with Cheney.

“I think there’s plenty of people that aren’t happy about that, and I think that is part of the nature of putting together a coalition,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez told CNN News Central host Kate Bolduan.
