LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — The grand jury in Manhattan investigating Donald Trump voted to indict the former president in connection to alleged 2016 hush money payments made by his then-attorney Michael Cohen to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, according to a New York Times report.
The vote took place earlier this week and the precise charges are not yet known since no formal announcement has been made.
Here's what some Nevada officials had to say about it:
"Today, for the first time in history, a former president of the United States has been criminally indicted by a grand jury. This is a somber day for our country. The legitimate case brought against Donald Trump by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is just the tip of the spear of legal worries for the former president. While the details of the indictment remain unclear at this time, we hope that the public will be able to learn more in the coming days. Now is not the time for the purely political attacks against the very open and transparent justice system that is holding someone accountable.
"In the past several weeks, Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and investigators on social media, showing the same irresponsibility and disdain for our institutions and law enforcement that led to the violent insurrection on our nation’s Capital on January 6th. We call on our Republican colleagues to put Party aside and condemn the former president's words and allow the legal process to move forward as it would for any other citizen, because no one is above the law, not even a former president of the United States."
"Today's indictment of former President Trump is a necessary step toward ensuring nobody - former presidents included - is above the law.
"We must push back on any notion that this indictment is political. This is a bad faith argument meant to distract from the hard work done by law enforcement in uncovering evidence and securing this indictment.
"We have seen Trump attempt to stoke a backlash against this indictment in a manner that alarmingly resembles the public statements he made in the leadup to the insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021.
"I do believe the American people see past the former president's statements, but I want to urge calm in the aftermath of today's events. The legal process must take its course. I, like many Americans, will be watching closely."
"This indictment is wrong and unjust political persecution."
"No one is above the law."
"Today, we saw a politically motivated indictment of President Trump. This is an attack on the rule of law, our republic, and should be repugnant to anyone who values an impartial and equal justice system. This isn’t a prosecution, it’s a persecution.
"Unfortunately, this blatant weaponization of our government agencies is not unprecedented - but it should be unacceptable to all Americans. Politically motivated prosecutions undermine the fundamental principles of the rule of law and equal justice for all, and lead to abuses of power and the erosion of our liberty. Democrats are putting their quest for power over the well-being of our country. You don’t have to agree with President Donald Trump’s policies to recognize that this prosecution is wrong, and is a dangerous path that has no place in our country."
“Never in our lifetime has one group of people felt so threatened by a presidential candidate, and that has been proven by District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s political persecution of Donald Trump. The American people are fully capable of choosing the next President, and they can do so without this cheap, political circus.
“I’d like to go back to the days when the conversations surrounding presidential elections were centered on who had the best ideas and who could best serve the American people. The fact that the national corporate media is so obsessed with the actions of one District Attorney only emphasizes the sad fact that thoughtful policy discussions are now irrelevant in our culture. With record-high inflation and a crisis at our southern border, I’d say we all have a few more pressing issues to focus on.
“And to the people of Manhattan, I’m sure you are feeling much safer now thanks to the actions of your DA.”
