NV Energy has successfully completed essential system upgrades and fire mitigation work in the Lake Tahoe Basin, finishing ahead of schedule. The operations, part of the Power Safe NV initiative, aimed to bolster the electrical system against natural disasters.

The project involved rebuilding 3.2 miles of line along State Route 28, replacing aging poles and bare copper wire with new poles wrapped in protective fire mesh and covered conductor wire. This upgrade is intended to enhance reliability and reduce the risk of ignitions from utility equipment. In total, 75 poles were replaced, and 3.2 miles of covered conductor wire were installed.

Additionally, the vegetation management team removed 1,972 stems, requiring 1,066 helicopter flight cycles, to clear hazard trees and brush along several sections of line around the lake.

"Given the high fire risk in the Tahoe Basin, our recent upgrades and fire mitigation efforts are crucial for preventing potential ignitions and ensuring a more resilient and reliable system for our customers," said Danyale Howard, director of the natural disaster protection program. "We deeply appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding as we strive to protect and enhance the safety of this community."

NV Energy expressed gratitude to the Tahoe community for their patience and understanding during these operations, which were completed without any safety incidents. The company says they're committed to protecting the cherished Lake Tahoe area for years to come.
