The Sierra Nevada is breaking several winter weather records with even more storms on the way.

Of the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab's top 10 most snowy seasons, 2023 ranks second with 677 inches of snow.

National Weather Service Data shows Mammoth Mountain has had its second-most yearly snowfall in 2023. Tahoe City is seeing their 5th snowiest season, and Reno is having its 11th snowiest season so far on the valley floor.

Reno has also not hit 65 degrees since November 1.

“There have only been, including this year, three years that that has occurred in Reno," said Dawn Johnson, Senior Meteorologist at the Reno National Weather Service. "If we look at some of our valley locations down in Mono County, they have seen their all time coldest winters on record.”

The snow and cold weather has lead to road closures, damaged structures, and a remarkable Sierra snowpack, which is what really matters when it comes to water supply.

"When you get up a little bit higher, we're in the 95th and 99th percentile. So while it might not be all-time record levels, it's still incredibly impressive," said Johnson.

Winter weather isn't quite over yet with even more snow forecasted through the end of March.
