The University of Nevada, Reno just released its annual crime statistics. It's part of the Security and Fire Report.
The numbers show incidents of aggravated assault went up from four cases on campus in 2021, three in 2022, to five last year.
Dating violence increased from nine on campus, one in 2022, and 11 in 2023.
Stalking went up from eight cases in 2021, four in 2022, and 15 last year.
UNR Police Chief Eric James said the numbers may be up because one case can be reported in multiple categories. He also said one case can spike the numbers in one category.
"One dating relationship, multiple events took place. We have to count each separate attack or alleged attack on our aggravated assault," he said.
The biggest jump was in motor vehicle thefts. There were 10 in 2021, 27 the following year, and 49 last year. The chief said the numbers are higher because scooters and electric bikes are also classified in that category. The numbers could be much higher the chief said because there are more scooters and e-bikes on campus than ever before.
Natan Park said he spent more than $1,000 on his scooter and keeps a close eye on it.
"I just I like keeping mine close by, but I've had friends and stuff get their scooters and bikes stolen. So yeah, I don't want that to happen because I spend a lot of money on this one," he said.
Other serious crimes dropped. Reports of rape went down from five cases in 2021, to four cases in 2022, and three cases last year. Burglary went down from 21 on campus in 2021, 20 the following year, and 14 last year.
Chief James said it's hard to put a finger on why some crimes and up and others are down.
"A lot of it's it's kind of conjecture and to determine what happened. You know, we could say maybe it was more education, maybe it was better enforcement," he said.
There were zero hate crimes reported over the past three years.
