Strong and gusty winds to bring travel impacts to northern Nevada

The wind arrives Friday ahead of a weak storm set to bring a few inches of snow to the Tahoe Basin.

Storm Impacts

Wind Advisory is in place for the Greater Reno-Carson Area, Greater Lake Tahoe Area and through Alpine-Mono Counties.

  • Friday 10 am – 8 pm
  • Southwest winds 25-35 mph are expected
  • Valley gusts 50-65 mph
  • Sierra gusts 100 mph
  • Winds will cause travel impacts for high profile vehicles in addition to turbulence, wind shear and mountain wave activity for aviation
  • Winds may be strong enough to cause damage and blow high profile vehicles over, especially along the Highway 395 and I-580 corridor
  • In addition, dangerous conditions are likely on Lake Tahoe and other area lakes

Squaw Valley saw sustained winds above 74 mph between 10:30 am - 12 pm which is the equivalent to a being impacted by a Category 1 Hurricane.

In terms of snow this storm brought a few light showers to the western Sierra but no significant snow was reported. Our next chance for decent snow in Tahoe arrives late Sunday into Monday December 17th, 2018.
